First Kiss

You pierced my lips
like hot coffee sips.

Her Strong Acid Man

I'm sitting in Chemistry class,
but all I can think about is you.
Maybe it's because I was
once a negative chloride ion waiting
for my sodium man.

Or maybe it's because I was
once a lonely carbon chain
longing for your hydrogen love

Or maybe I was once an unbalanced equation,
in need of your coefficients.

We definitely have chemistry though,
because when everything in my stoichiometry
problem seems to be canceling out,
you always remain.

A Pez Dispenser

He can't help but smile when he sees one
on display next to the register.
Each one a different character,
with their brightly colored bodies shining
through the clear plastic, not to mention
the sweet candy hidden inside. She stands
in her plastic covering with her head
and feet facing straight forward
ready to be enjoyed. He unwraps her.
Her chiseled features fit nicely into his palm,
making it easy to pull back her head,
to release her many flavors into his mouth.

Only goodness comes out of her mouth,
but don't be deceived she's spring-loaded,
full of anxiety and insecurity.
He shows her so much attention,
never really saying how he feels.
She longs to show her love, but finds
it hard to express herself.
She dresses up her slim figure
with a joyful appearance, hoping
that it will make a difference. His love seems
so close, but she can't seem to move her arms
out to touch it. She told herself to expect
nothing, so she'll just continue to bring
a smile to his face and let him enjoy
her sweet candy.

A Rocky Mountain Retreat (written while reading Ginsberg at the Mudhouse)

I saw you in a painting,
perched on the old brick
at our favorite place to be.

I can't imagine you not here.
Oh how you've changed
and continue still,
looking more like the product
of Warhol, hung on the wall.

Please come off of there and take
me away in your green automobile.

"we'd batter up the cloudy highway,"
headlights reflecting off animals' eyes.
You'd hold me close
on the huge bench seat,
with Jesus' light revealing the road.

Become Aware (a first attempt at slam poetry)

I'm not here to change you, I just ask that you open up your mind,
and don't look to me for answers, cause that's not what you'll find.
Start asking questions, and admit that you don't know,
it's the only way to understanding and a life that will surely grow.

So Christians, if you don't mind, I have a few questions.
Since when did God call us to be Pharisees and Sadduceans?
Why do you hate evolution and try to ban it from the schools?
Is that what you truly believe, or a doctrinal rule?
What if God made his people from a big bang and an ape?
Would you still call him Lord, or would you lose your faith?
What if Darwin had been a prophet and his theory a book?
If it was placed between Genesis and Exodus would that change your outlook?

Don't tell me I'm too liberal and my views are straight from hell.
We lift up the same hand in worship and have a testimony to tell.
I could really care less what Darwin has to declare,
but you can only find understanding when you become aware.
