Keeping You Awake

This corner quersy is particularly damaged.
Too many hot coffee spills
starts to eat away at the surface.

And you can add as much sugar
to your coffee as you want,
but the sweetness is always followed by
the inability to sleep.

Thoughts spin through your head
about what it would be like if someday
it worked out.

And it's always the same.
You look to me for permission,
but you put your finger in it anyway.
Like the whipped cream
was put there just for you.

We discuss our new perspectives,
exchange smiles and ask
what each other is thinking.
The only appropriate time to lie.

I tire first. My one shot of expresso
can't compete with the bottomless cups.
So you agree to go, but always ask
if there is time for one more.
As I wait, I grab your hand
from across the table and hold it
until your cup is empty.

And when I ask why you're so tired
the next day, you says it's all the caffeine
that's keeping you awake.
